Back to School in ESL

I can’t believe it’s almost time to start school again! I love being in a school that has a team of ESL teachers. Our admin support multilingual learners (MLs) so well, and part of that is ensuring that there are enough language specialists to cover our caseload of students! So this year, we get to have a fifth ESL teacher— YAY!!!

The new teacher will be working with the 4th grade MLs, which is the group of students I primarily worked with last year in 3rd grade. Since she is new to the school, I wanted to do something that I’ve been meaning to do for a while: create an ML Profile one-pager. This is the one-stop-shop where she and the 4th grade teachers can find all the pertinent information about the MLs with the highest needs: languages spoken, literacy skills, services/supports needed… the list goes on!

Sure, you could find this stuff out throughout the year or on Infinite Campus (our online school database)… but let’s face it, teachers don’t have time to wade through all of that info at the beginning of the year. I want my students to have a successful start to the year, and I want their families to be well supported as well linguistically. So this is my solution! I only filled these out for Newcomers & Levels 1-2 (maybe a couple in Level 3) English learners, because they’re the ones who need the most support and I will likely have the best success if I give teachers only the most pertinent info.

I am excited about this profile page, so I want to share it with you too! I hope you can use it to create an equitable start to the year, where your students can be given the appropriate support they need from the get-go. Although I created this to pass on to a new ESL teacher for the students I already am familiar with, I think I will also be using it to gather info on my new incoming 3rd graders! What do you think?

You can get this EDITABLE profile page (digital and printable) by signing up below or clicking here. It’ll be sent straight to your inbox to begin using immediately!

Here’s to an equitable, exciting, and efficient school year!
